Qigong (Chi Kung) comes from the Chinese words "Qi" meaning "Energy" plus "Gong", meaning "work" or "practice". It is a term that describes a Chinese Exercise system the focuses on cultivating and attracting "Qi" or "lifeforce" energies. Pronounced like "Chee Gung", Qigong (sometimes spelled "Chi Kung") is a unique Chinese exercise system. Through individual effort, practitioners build up their health and prevent illness by combining discipline of mind, body and the body's "Qi" (vital force).
one hour of Chi Kung burns as many calories as an hour of aerobics
Exercises are performed slowly, tied into breathing, and all movement begins and ends together. Consequent benefits include increased lung capacity, strengthening muscles and joints, coordination, good posture, and relaxation. In this way Chi Kung can also be used also improve martial abilities. All the exercises work every part of the body with some movements especially beneficial for specific parts of the body. For example, an exercise called "White Crane Flaps its Wings" is good for strengthening the back and correcting back problems. The exercises are surprisingly hard work considering the small amount of movement involved. This is because the exercises also stimulate your internal organs (one hour of Chi Kung burns as many calories as an hour of aerobics!). However, all the exercises are very relaxing and once you have learned them correctly you can practise them on your own.
