Penang Bridge Speed Limits - Beware of Police Speed Traps

Lately lots of sound here and there talking about summons they had to pay for speeding on the Penang Bridge. To be clear, the summon comes with a copy of their vehicle picture so that no confusion arises.

Since early this year, many speed trap cameras have been set up along the entire bridge, even on hot sunny days and early morning office rush hours. As a results, many motorists and individuals have been booked by the police.

For the benefits of all readers here and Penang Bridge road users, I am pleased to enclosed herewith some clarifications from the PPSB with regards to the 3 different speed limits imposed on the Penang Bridge.

For easy reference, please see the pictorial summary of the speed traps attached.

PENANG BRIDGE SDN. BERHAD (PPSB) CLARIFIES SPEED LIMIT

Penang Bridge Sdn Bhd explains the different speed limits imposed while driving on the bridge.

There are three different speed limits at specific locations on the bridge.

(1) The 50 km / hr speed limit applies to entrance to the bridge from Bayan Lepas and Jelutong and the exit from the bridge to Bayan Lepas and Jelutong.

(2) The 70 km / hr limit is enforced on km 4.3 to km 8.5 for both Penang and Perai bound-vehicles, while

(3) The 80 km / hr limit is implemented from km 0.4 approaching the bridge (after toll plaza) to km 4.3 for both Penang and Perai bound-vehicles.
These speed limits are in accordance with the Road Safety Audit conducted and endorsed by the Malaysian Highway Authorities. They are meant to promote safe driving and better motoring habits.

For convenience, signages to alert drivers of the varying speed limits have been posted at the starting point of the speed limit is imposed.

Fatal accident causes 4-hour gridlock on Penang Bridge

BUTTERWORTH: A fatal accident involving a motorcycle and a trailer on the Penang Bridge Monday morning held up hundreds of motorists, bringing traffic almost to a standstill for more than four hours at the North-South Expressway from Sungai Dua to the bridge.

State Traffic chief DSP Abdul Rahim Md Din said the accident, which killed the 52-year-old motorcyclist, happened at 6.50am on the lane heading towards the island.

The motorcyclist, Azhar Pakwanteh, died on the spot due to severe injuries, he said.

He was from Lunas in Kedah and was on his way to work at a factory in Bayan Lepas, Abdul Rahim said.

His body was sent to the Seberang Jaya Hospital. - Bernama

UPDATE: 12 July 2011
Cable Fire Causes Massive Traffic Jam On Penang Bridge

The jam stretched for several kilometres to the city and Butterworth after the fire broke out at 5.52pm yesterday.

GEORGE TOWN, July 11 (Bernama) - Hundreds of vehicles were stranded for about two hours on the entrance and exit lanes of Penang Bridge Monday after a cable caught fire.

A spokesman for Penang Bridge Sdn Bhd (PBSB) said there was massive traffic congestion as the cable fire occurred at the peak hour of 5.52pm.

He said traffic improved at 7pm after the fire was put out and repairs were done to the cable.

Penang Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) general manager Abdul Aziz Jaafar told Bernama the cable under the bridge caught fire at 5.25pm.

He said the fire did not affect electricity supply to the state as it was only a standby cable.

"The 132kV cable fire was completely put out at 6.30pm. TNB is investigating the cause," he added.

Power cable fire on Penang bridge causes massive traffic jam

BUTTERWORTH: Three power cables caught fire on the Penang Bridge, causing massive traffic jams on both sides of the bridge that stretched several kilometers.

The 10.40am fire at km1.5 of the island-bound stretch also caused a brief power disruption on the island, especially in the Bayan Lepas area.

The bumper-to-bumper crawl stretched several kilometers on both sides of the bridge.

Black smoke was be seen billowing at the stretch where the cables were located under the bridge.

The fire was put out some five hours later at about 3.20pm.

State Public Works, Utilities and Transportation Committee chairman Lim Hock Seng said TNB switched to an alternative power source to restore power supply within five minutes.

“Necessary action is also being taken to determine the cable fault and to have it repaired as soon as possible,” he said Saturday.

Lim said he believed the incident was not due to human error, as the cable was located under the bridge.

Meanwhile, the traffic jam on the bridge caused many to turn to the ferries.

A ferry terminal spokesperson said both terminals on the island and mainland had seen a queue starting about 11am.

As at 3.40pm, the queues stretched as far as 1.5km from the terminals.

“We have six ferries operating. The ferries will travel slower during low tide,” the spokesperson said.

LATEST NEWS REGARDING HEAVY VEHICLES USING PENANG BRIDGE

UPDATE: 19 Feb 2009

Traffic along the Penang bridge, heading towards the mainland, came to a standstill when a crane, used in the widening works, overturned at KM3.6 of the Penang Bridge early this morning.

A Penang Bridge Sdn Bhd (PBSB) said the crane that was used in construction works to widen the lanes of the bridge, collapsed at about 3am and reduced the two-lane pathway towards Prai to just one.
"The incident has caused a massive traffic jam for those heading towards the mainland, especially from the Jelutong highway, Gelugor and Bayan Lepas," said the spokesman when contacted here today.
He added that PBSB had managed to remove the crane at 11am but expected the bridge to remain congested for a few hours.

Girl Blue Eyes

Deep in the Internet I found this story. It is scary like hell but I can’t resist to share it with you. So, according with Jojo if you stare into girl’s eyes for longer than 5 minutes… but better read the Jojo’s story: The story is this, in Japan shortly before a teenage girl committed suicide, she drew this picture, scanned it and posted it online. In Korea this story broke out and it spread like wildfire. There are various posts around in Korean forums that say that the viewer gets drawn to the girls blue eyes, they say they can detect a hint of wraith and sadness within the eyes. Maybe the girl had died with so much sadness and anger that her spirit haunts the image, or maybe the image provokes sadness, similar to the song 'Gloomy Sunday'. The freaky bit is this, they say it is hard for a person to stare into the girls eyes for longer than 5 minutes, and there are reports that some people have taken their own lives after doing so. People say the picture changes, as you view it there is a hint of a growing taunting smirk appearing on the girls lips or a dark ring grows around the girl or her eyes. One thing is for sure, the picture has sparked a curiosity in me that I must find out, i do feel a presence when I look at the image, whether it is evil or not I can not judge. I would like to know what the global online community feels and maybe even experts in art would be able to resolve why the eyes of this image can draw the viewer in so deeply?

Inspired by marshmallow shooters, this air-powered tampon gun turns your feminine hygiene products into high-flying projectiles. Have a shootout between rival tampon brands, or use it as a fun alternative to paintball. The tampon shooter has a range of 10 to 20 feet depending on your ammo and lung capacity. The matching bandolier lets you carry a full “clip” (i.e., box) of 20 tampons, so you’ll never be caught short in the heat of battle.

World's oldest condom

The oldest surviving condom in the world has gone on display in an Austrian museum.

The reusable condom dates back to 1640 and is completely intact, as is its orginal users' manual, written in Latin.

The manual suggests that users immerse the condom in warm milk prior to its use to avoid diseases.

The antique, found in Lund in Sweden, is made of pig intestine and is one of 250 ancient objects related to sex on display at the Tirolean County Museum in Austria this summer.

ON IMPACT

UPDATE: 6 MAR 2009

Asteroid passes within 50,000 miles of Earth

NASA scientists say an asteroid capable of causing significant damage zipped past the Earth earlier this week. The asteroid, named 2009 DD45, "buzzed" the planet on Monday, coming within 48,800 miles of the Earth's surface.
This is just twice as high as the orbits of some telecommunications satellites and around one-fifth of the distance to the moon.
The asteroid was around the same size as one that levelled more than 800 square miles of forest in Siberia a century ago.
Scientists had been monitoring it since late last month and were aware that it would pose no threat to Earth.

Burj Dubai 720,1 m – 6 OCTOBER........................ ==> 850 m , in 2009

In the world's highest position is BABU SASSI from Kerala India - the crane operator of the top most floor of Burj Dubai, the tallest building in the world.
Babu Sassi, a fearless young man from southern India is the cult hero of Dubai 's army of construction workers.Known as the "Indian on the top of the world", Babu is the crane operator at the world's tallest building - the 819-meter (2,687 ft) Burj Dubai. His office, the cramped crane cab perched on top of the Burj, is also his home - apparently it takes too long to come down to the ground each day to make it worthwhile.. When the building is completed, its elevators will be the world's fastest.
Stories about his daily dalliance with death are discussed in revered terms by Dubai 's workers. Some say he has been up there for more than a year, others whisper that he's paid 30,000 dirhams ($8,168) a month compared with the average wage of 800 dirhams a month. All agree he's worth it.

UPDATE: 10 OCT 2009
Burj Dubai to Open on December 2009

DUBAI — The world’s tallest skyscraper, Burj Dubai, will open on December 2, the project developers have said in a commitment of date. The opening coincides with the 38th National Day of the United Arab Emirates.

“We are shooting for the National Day,” Emaar Properties Chairman
Mohammed Alabbar told CNN on Friday. “I think it is achievable; lot of challenges, but we will get there.”

Speaking about the last-minute touches, he said, “We have about 12,000 people inside the building and outside trying to achieve the December 2
opening.”

Construction of Burj Dubai, which shoots 800 metres into the skies over Business Bay, began on September 21, 2004 as part of the $20-billion Downtown Burj Dubai real estate development.

The opening of Emaar’s flagship project has met with delays. It was originally scheduled to open last September. Since then there has been suspense over whether it would, in fact, open by the end of 2009.

Alabbar said all units in Burj Dubai had been sold out well before Dubai’s property sector slump upon the global recession that began in September 2008.

“The Burj was sold almost three-and-half years ago,” he said. “The day we launched this.” The 162-floor tower, whose glass cladding lends it a metallic sheen in the sun, aims to be Dubai’s
signature.

Alabaar added that property prices in Downtown Burj Dubai area were much higher than anywhere else because of the high quality of development and environment.

UPDATE: 5 NOV 2009

Burj Dubai to Open on January 4 2010

The Burj Dubai will be opened on January 4, 2010, coinciding with the accession to power of His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.

The 160-plus storey structure is considered the world’s tallest building.

Mohammad Ali Al Abbar, Chairman of Emaar real estate company said the company decided to launch the tower on this date as a gesture of gratitude towards Shaikh Mohammad, who is considered the builder of modern Dubai.

Burj Dubai became the tallest building in the world in just 1,276 days, with the help of more than 5,000 consultants and skilled construction workers.

Work on the Burj Dubai started in January 2004. The tower reached 100 levels in January 2007. A month later, it surpassed the Sears Tower in Chicago as the building with the most floors in the world.

Burj Dubai is now the world’s tallest building and tallest man-made structure, having surpassed the height of the KVLY-TV mast in North Dakota, USA.

The Burj Dubai houses residences and commercial spaces, apart from Giorgio Armani’s The Armani Hotel & Residences.

It also anchors Downtown Burj Dubai, a Dh73 billion mixed-use mega project, already a bustling community described as the new “heart of the city”.

Dubai renames world's tallest tower Burj Khalifa - after ruler that bailed out emirate
The opening ceremony for the Burj was marked by a dazzling fireworks display that wreathed the tower in stars and smoke. The final height of the tower, which has been shrouded in secrecy, was also revealed to be 2,717ft (828 metres).

MORE UPDATE: Saudi billionaire to build world’s tallest tower
Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

DEVELOPERS in Dubai have announced plans to build a tower 1km high - beating the booming city state's own world record.
With the world's tallest building, the Burj Dubai, nearing completion, Dubai World president Sultan Ahmed bin Sulaim said the new tower would be "one of a kind".
The tower, which will take more than a decade to complete, will be the centerpiece of a sprawling development state-owned builder Nakheel plans to create in the rapidly growing "New Dubai" section of the city.

Foundation work has already begun on the tower, Nakheel Chief Executive Chris O'Donnell told FoxNews.
The tower will be located between two of the city's artificial palm-shaped islands, which Nakheel also built.
The project will include a manmade inland harbor and 40 additional towers up to 90 floors high.
About 150 elevators will carry employees and workers to the Nakheel Tower's more than 200 floors, the company said.
The building will be composed of four separate towers joined at various levels and centered on an open atrium.

"It does show a lot of confidence in this environment of worldwide credit problems and a souring global economy," Standard Chartered Bank's Dubai-based regional head of research Marios Maratheftis said.
Dubai is already home to the world's tallest building, even if it remains unfinished.
The Burj Dubai, or Dubai Tower in Arabic, is being built by Nakheel's chief competitor, Emaar Properties.
Emaar has kept the final height of the silvery steel-and-glass tower a closely guarded secret, saying only that it stood at a "new record height" of 688 metres at the start of last month.
It's due to be finished next September.

The final height of Nakheel's proposed tower is likewise a secret, as is the price tag. The company would only say it will be more than 1km tall - or the height of more than three of New York's Chrysler Buildings stacked end-to-end.

UPDATE: 2 AUG 2011

Saudi Arabia to build world's tallest building

Riyadh - Saudi Arabia's Kingdom Holding Company, owned by billionaire prince Alwaleed bin Talal, announced Tuesday plans to build the world's tallest buildings after signing a 4.6 billion Saudi riyal (around 1.23 billion dollars) deal.

The tower, to be located in the Red Sea port city of Jeddah, is to be more than 1,000 metres high, and will include a hotel and luxury offices and serviced apartments will be designed by U.S. architecture firm Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill. It is expected to take five years and will occupy an area of 500,000 square meters.

After it is completed, the Jeddah tower would replace Dubai's Burj Khalifa as the world's tallest building. Burj Khalifa is 828 metres tall and was opened last year.

How to cook an egg with Mobile Phones

Subject: How To Cook an Egg with Mobile Phones

I might add it takes approximately 2 minutes of speaking on a cellular phone for the radiation to cross the protective Blood Brain Barrier. So whenever there is a landline available, use it in preference to your cell. Enjoy the interesting article I received from the Raw Family... How Two Russian Journalists Cooked an Egg with their Mobile Phones Vladimir Lagovski and Andrei Moiseynko from Komsomolskaya Pravda Newspaper in Moscow decided to learn first-hand how harmful cell phones are. There is no magic in cooking with your cell phone. The secret is in the radio waves that the cell phone radiates. The journalists created a simple microwave structure as shown in the picture. They called from one cell phone to the other and left both phones on talking mode. They placed a tape recorder next to phones to imitate sounds of speaking so the phones would stay on. After, 15 minutes: The egg became slightly warm. 25 minutes: The egg became very warm. 40 minutes: The egg became very hot. 65 minutes: The egg was cooked. (As you can see.)

Conclusion 1: Cooking eggs with mobile phones is possible but very expensive ($4.55 or 123 Rubles)

Conclusion 2: All this talk of danger is exaggerated; even if your brain gets cooked, it would take a couple hours of talking on a cell phone.

Conclusion 3: We do not recommend carrying cell phone in your pants. Photos by Anatoly Zhdanov. Translated into English by Victoria Boutenko. Source: Komsomolskaya Pravda, April 23, 2006
